Routine Maintenance
Vacuuming
Regular vacuuming is the most important step in rug maintenance. We recommend vacuuming at least once a week to prevent dirt and dust from settling into the fibers. Do not use a beater bar or rotating brush on wool or silk rugs, as this can severely damage the yarn. Use a suction-only attachment.
Shedding
It is completely normal for new hand-knotted wool or bamboo silk rugs to shed loose fibers during the first few months. This is a natural characteristic of premium spun yarn and is not a defect. Regular, gentle vacuuming will expedite the process and the shedding will eventually subside.
Rotation
To ensure even wear and prevent uneven fading from sunlight, we highly recommend rotating your rug 180 degrees every 3 to 6 months.
Rug Pads
Always use a high-quality rug pad. A pad not only prevents slipping but also acts as a shock absorber, extending the life of your rug’s foundation by reducing friction against hard floors.
Spills & Spot Cleaning
Time is of the essence when a spill occurs. Never rub or scrub the spill, as this will drive the liquid deeper into the pile and potentially distort the fibers.
- Blot Immediately: Use a clean, undyed white cloth or paper towel to firmly press down and absorb as much liquid as possible.
- Scrape Solids: If the spill includes solids, use a dull edge (like a spoon) to gently lift the solid matter off the rug.
- Dilute (If Necessary): For stubborn stains, lightly dab the area with a cloth dampened with cold water. Avoid soaking the rug.
- Call a Professional: For tough stains like red wine, pet accidents, or ink, immediately contact a professional rug cleaner. Do not attempt to use over-the-counter carpet cleaning chemicals.
Professional Washing
Your Re Knott rug should be professionally cleaned every 3 to 5 years depending on foot traffic.
Never dry clean or steam clean a hand-knotted rug.
These methods use harsh chemicals and high heat that can strip natural oils from the wool, melt silk fibers, and damage the structural foundation. Always seek out an expert who specializes in the traditional submersion washing of oriental and handmade rugs.
